The French startup NAAREA is leading an energy revolution with its innovative fourth-generation nuclear microreactor, the XAMR. This reactor transforms nuclear waste into a clean, decentralized energy source, marking a milestone in the circular economy. However, its development has been made possible thanks to the virtual twin created on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform from Dassault Systèmes, which accelerated its design and ensured full lifecycle traceability.
A virtual environment for a real-world challenge
In just 18 months, NAAREA developed the virtual twin of its reactor using a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach that connects all disciplines from the outset. This digital environment made it possible to validate the architecture, size, and functionality of the XAMR before building a physical prototype, reducing development time and errors.
“The virtual twin is a fantastic accelerator. It allows us to design and simulate at the same time, test ideas, and move forward quickly,” explained Jean-Luc Alexandre, CEO of NAAREA.

NAAREA uses the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform to develop the XAMR virtual twin and manage the reactor throughout its entire lifecycle.
Full traceability and collaboration
With the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform, NAAREA centralized all its design, engineering, and manufacturing processes within a single collaborative environment. This enabled the company to:
- Manage the traceability of thousands of interconnected parts and systems.
- Simulate and validate thermal, mechanical, and fluid behavior using SIMULIA.
- Collaborate in real time across multidisciplinary teams to optimize every reactor component.
The XAMR: A model for the future of energy
The XAMR is not only efficient and safe, but it also contributes to the circular economy by reusing long-lived nuclear waste as fuel. With its compact and modular design, it promises to be a viable solution for remote regions and countries with limited electrical infrastructure.
Thanks to Dassault Systèmes’ technology, NAAREA is one step closer to commercializing its revolutionary reactor by 2030, demonstrating how integrated virtual environments can transform complex industries.
