The transition from diesel to electric trains is already a reality in Europe. In this context, CAF is involved in projects such as the development of Civity BEMU trains in Germany, contributing to significantly reducing CO₂ emissions and promoting a more sustainable transport model.

To compete in increasingly demanding international contracts —where quality, performance, price, and lifecycle maintenance are evaluated— the company needed to strengthen its efficiency in design, validation, and configuration management.

The decision: evolving to 3DEXPERIENCE

With more than 30 years of working with Dassault Systèmes solutions, moving to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform was a natural evolution.

Moving to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform was a natural evolution for us,” explains Sergio Heras, PLM Director at CAF. “It allowed us to improve our design and product lifecycle management capabilities, while also supporting a new approach to configuration and change management.”

The platform acts as a central engineering repository, enabling:

  • Reuse of previous designs and templates
  • Acceleration of new proposal development
  • Full version control
  • Digitization of previously manual processes

The impact: designing, validating, and competing better

Thanks to the integration of CATIA, ENOVIA, and SIMULIA within a single environment, CAF has migrated most of its design processes to the platform and strengthened its digital validation capabilities before manufacturing.

We are using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to develop competitive bids,” says Joseba Amenabar, Technical Director of the Rolling Stock area. The ability to simulate, validate, and reuse knowledge enables more agile and technically robust responses to tenders.

In addition, centralized data management with ENOVIA has improved access to information and reduced errors caused by inconsistent versions.

CAF uses the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to optimize its design processes and develop cutting-edge railway solutions.

Toward full digital continuity

The next step is to fully connect engineering and production. CAF is evaluating the use of DELMIA on the platform to strengthen that digital continuity.

The goal is to achieve digital continuity with our data from engineering to production,” says Heras.

A strategic move that not only optimizes internal processes, but also reinforces CAF’s position as a benchmark in sustainable and next-generation railway solutions.
